1.

Let’s add your business to Google. First, make sure you are logged into your Gmail account, then head over to https://www.google.com/business and click ‘Start Now’ in the top right corner.

Don't have a Gmail or Google account? ( click me )

You need a Gmail or Google account to add your business to Google search. If you do not have an account, you can click “Sign In” and then click on “Create Account”.

2.

You should now see the first step to list your business on Google search. Start typing your business name into the blank field below where it says ‘Business name’. As you type, you may see your business name and city appear in a list below the field, or you may not. Once you have finished typing your business name, or you have selected your business from the list that appeared, click “Next” to continue.

3.

Now, enter an accurate business address where you can receive mail. We’ll explain why receiving mail is important later! If you operate by delivering services or you do not have a physical business address, you can enter your home address. Don’t worry – we will cover how to hide this address next.

4.

If you are a painter, landscaper, mobile spa, or anyone who delivers services to a customer base, click on the checkbox next to the truck icon, as well as the one next to the store front. Your address will not shown on the Google listing in search if you click these checkboxes. Click “Next” to continue.

5.

If you didn’t need to hide your address, skip to step 6 below. If you did choose to hide your address, you will be asked to select either a radius in which you complete services (in miles/kilometers) or list different regions or cities you service. This information helps show your business information to people who are searching in your local area. Once you have chosen one of these options, click on “Next” to continue.

6.

Now, you need to choose the category your business falls under. If your business happens to fit into a few categories, pick the most relevant. Once you have finished created your listing, you can add additional categories within the Google My Business dashboard. Click “Next” to continue.

7.

On this page, enter your business phone number, or a phone number you are comfortable having displayed on the internet. This phone number will be connected to your listing. It will serve as the contact number for customers to reach you. If you have a website, make sure to link that as well. Curious customers love to be able to see your work, or the products and services you offer.

8.

Lastly, to add your business to Google, they require postcard verification for new listings. In about 5 business days, you will receive a small perforated letter with a 5 digit code inside. It will be sent to the street address you provided in Step 4. Your Google listing will not be visible to the public until you receive that letter and enter the 5 digit code at the Google My Business website. Click “Next” to continue.

9.

Click on “Customize Listing” to get to your Google My Business dashboard. This is where you can add your hours of operation, description of you services and, once you verify your business, you can even see how your Google business listing is performing.

10.

Make sure to bookmark your Google My Business dashboard! This is where you will return once you receive your postcard mailing with the verification code to list your business on Google. When you receive that mailing, just click on “Verify Location” on the left side and enter the 5 digit code. Then your business listing will be live on Google!

And there you have it!  You’ve given yourself a leg up on the competition by creating your Google business listing for free. When you list your business on Google, you’re increasing the chances that someone will find your business and contact you about your services.
